Growing In Christ

Generous or Stingy? Do you give away encouraging words?

We took our one-year-old grandson for his first ride on the Reindeer Carousel in our mall last Thursday. Many people don’t like the commercialism of the Christmas season and the fact that the Reindeer Carousel was already up and running on November 9. But I like this early reminder that Christmas is fast approaching, which causes me to ponder life, giving, and Christ’s return.

Uncovering the Calm in Chaos

At least once a week I sit and find a calm moment on a bench dedicated to a godly woman I never met, Kaye Shipley. I came to know who she was through her husband, Mark, who didn’t know me, but still drove out of his way to pick me up in St. Louis. Oddly, I met him again in the parking lot of the national WMU building in Birmingham, Alabama. That’s how I learned about the family connection to the bench in the memorial garden at our office.

Attracting People to Christ: Your Signature Scent

Smells affect us in different ways. In our little neighborhood, a steak grilling at the neighbor’s house makes us want to invite ourselves to dinner. The connection between memory and our sense of smell allows us to associate places and events with different scents. I like the smell of cinnamon at Christmas and watermelon in the summer, but there are certain smells that trigger bad memories and even danger, such as the smell associated with natural gas.
